The National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) is the
broadest-based umbrella organization of the pro-democracy Burman and
non-Burman ethnic nationalities. It was formed in August 1992 and is
composed of four main opposition groups The National Democratic Front (NDF), the Democratic Alliance Of Burma (DAB), the
National League for Democracy — Liberated Area (NLD — LA) and the
Members of Parliament Union (MPU).
The NDF was formed in 10 May 1976. It is made up exclusively of non-Burman
ethnic armed opposition groups.
The DAB was formed in November 1988. It comprises both Burman and non-Burman
ethnic groups.
The NLD-LA was formed in February 1991. It is composed of members of the
National League for Democracy who have been forced to flee the country and
operate outside of Burma.
The MPU was formed in May 1996 and comprises members of elected
representatives from the 1990 general elections
The NCUB was formed out of the need for a comprehensive political alliance
among these opposition groups, to seek ways for compromises over political
differences, draw up strategies to overcome the military dictatorship and
formulate policies for the movement and the future of Burma.
Aims of NCUB
-
To topple the Burmese military dictatorship
-
To promote understanding and cooperation among Burma’s
ethnic groups
-
To bring about a democratic system of government that
guarantees human rights for all Burma’s citizens
-
To establish a Federal Union under which equality among all
ethnic groups is guaranteed
The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma
The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB) is the
Burmese government in exile. It was formed in December 18, 1990 at the
former opposition headquarters of Manerplaw with the full support of the
opposition groups which currently are members of the NCUB.
The NCGUB is made up of elected MPs from the NLD and three non-Burman ethnic
nationalities parties.
The Ministries of the NCGUB coordinate and work very closely with the
