Learning from the European Parliament
Plenary session
Topic: Joint
debate and votes- the fight against terrorism
In
Strasbourg, I joined the debate and votes on the report from the political
groups on EU action plan against terrorism, preventing, preparing for and
responding to terrorist attacks, protection of critical infrastructure,
combating terrorist financing, exchange of information and intelligence
(serious offences, including terrorism) cooperation concerning terrorist
offences, information exchange and cooperation on terrorist offences,
Retention of data to combat crime, including terrorism, and Bioterrorism-
Oral questions to Council and Commission.
Impression
Gain
more idea on the EU contribution to the fight against terrorism and foresee
the future EU action.
The
political groups study day
Topic: Group
of the European People’s Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED) and Group of
the alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) study day on the
situation in Cuba.
The
activity is organised by the EPP-ED and ALDE political groups in cooperation
with the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba in order to exerting
pressure on Fidel Castro’s regime. There are the reports on disregard
humanitarian and respective of fundamental right in the country. Therefore,
the movement needs a statement of condemnation for the government repression
and a specific diplomatic intervention from EU.
Impression
The
activity focuses on the international role of European Union under the
European cohesion policy towards EU regional policy. This is mainly
emphasis on EU initiatives aimed at promoting promote cooperation between
regions, the sustainable development of cities toward the respect for human
dignity, human rights and the respective fundamental rights in order to
eliminate dictatorship regime, which is contradict to democratic principle.
Public hearing
Topic: Landmines Information Day-‘The European Parliament
for a Mine-Free World’
The
public hearing is the first join hearing of the Development, the
International Trade and the Foreign Affairs Committees via the Subcommittee
on Security and Defense.
The
guest speakers are include with the Nobel peace laureate 1997-Jody Williams
and Ambassador Wofgang Petritsch, president of the UN Nairobi summit on a
mine-free world on the Nairobi Action Plan 2005-9 and a many of government,
international organisation and NGO representatives brought together to rise
awareness on the fight against landmines.
Impression
Attending the public hearing brings me to understand more on the problem of
landmines in the victim country. There is also the event displayed a wide
variety of exhibits, including examples of landmine shells as well as some
dramatic photos from mine-affected area.
Delegation meetings
I did
attend some delegation meetings with a strong participation in Strasbourg as
follows:
-
Delegation
for relations with the Masherq countries and the Gulf.
-
Delegation
for relations with the countries of
Southeast Asia
and the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN).
Impression
One of
the most interesting meetings is the delegation for relations with the
Masherq countries and the Gulf. One hour meeting gave me knowledge on
political situation in the
Middle East. The delegates exchanged their view on the current situation in the
Syria and Lebanon
mainly concern on the Lebanese election transparency after the withdrawal of
Syrian troop. Moreover, the Human Rights abuses do also seriously consider
in Lebanon since there are a case of presidency assassination and journalist
murder.
The
delegation meeting for relations with ASEAN devoted to a meeting with the
Vietnamese delegates. The meeting did continuing from the latest Vietnamese
Parliament’s visit on March 16-17, 2005. The argument emphasised on the
serious human right problems and the possibility of slower contribution from
EU after the Union has a problem on constitution ratification. However, EU
insisted the immense cooperation needed on promoting human rights in ASEAN
from Vietnam especially the military dictatorship and Human Rights abuses in
Myanmar.
