Overview
Firstly, I would like to extend my sincere
appreciation and thanks to Alliance of Liberal and Democrats (ALDE), Council
of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) and Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia for
giving me this opportunity to take part in this internship programme within
the ALDE Group of European Parliament.
I was
assigned to the
Committee on Culture and Education in which
Ms.
Rosario Galofre is the group administrator.
For the first two
weeks of my
internship period, I had the flexibility to follow other committees and
attended various public hearings, ALDE Group meetings, delegation meetings
and plenary sessions in Brussels. In addition, the resource center in
European Parliament allowed me to learn more generally on European social
issues which are also my field of interest.
I spent the next two
weeks of my internship following Ms. Rosario to attend committee meetings,
group discussions and the plenary session in Strasbourg. In May, the Culture
and Education committee was debating the topic on film heritage and
competitiveness of related activities, as well as the EU information and
communication strategy. Constructive debates were conducted and attended by
Members of European Parliament (MEPs), administrators and assistants. During
these meetings, the group attempted to draw up a joint position on the
issues discussed at the plenary session. In Strasbourg, the MEPs voted on
the texts submitted and explained such votes. They proposed resolutions and
submitted written or oral questions to the members of the Council and
Commission. MEPs must attend in person in order to vote; proxy voting is not
allowed.
Throughout the period of
the internship, I have gathered a better understanding on the functioning of
the European Parliament, the importance of transparency and openness in
achieving a matured democratic system. The most common means in promoting
transparency and openness is through the use and development of websites.
The European Parliament has a well-managed and informative web page. All
meetings schedules, agendas and summary reports are publicized
and open to the public. Besides, the website’s content is available in 20 EU
official languages.
Overall, It is an
informative and practical programme from which I gained much. It has opened
my mind and made me realise how ignorant I was with international issues. It
has stimulated me and increased my urge for understanding global issues
which are concurrently being discussed and debated together by the world
leaders at the delegation meetings in the European Parliament.
