Internship period: 10 November 2003 – 19 December 2003

Suggestion for Future Interns

The programme was very useful, rewarding, and educational; hence I would like to express my sincere wishes that it be continued in the future, providing Asian interns with the extraordinary opportunity to visit Europe, the European Parliament and the ELDR Group.

I allow myself to present a number of suggestions for future interns and ELDR/CALD/FNF colleagues who administer the programme:

  • Interns, prior to arrival at the European Parliament should visit web-site  http://www.europarl.ep.ec (The European Parliament, Commission, and Union home pages) to obtain a basic understanding of activities. The interns selected should if possible be provided with a) "How the European Union Works" and b) "The ABC of Community Law" ; these booklets could be jointed to the invitation letter, for example.

  • Interns, before starting their work in the ELDR Group, should be clear about the political field they are interested in, i.e. which parliamentary committee they want to follow: Foreign Affairs Policy (Human Rights, Security, Defence), Budget Committee (EU Budget), Home Affairs (immigration, asylum, police co-operation, terrorism), Economic Affairs, Legal Affairs (internal market), Industry, Regional Policy, Environment (protection of the environment), Agriculture, Fishery, Culture, Development (Third World countries), Constitutional Affairs (EU Treaties), Women's Rights, or Petitions.

  • Interns are also recommended to communicate with previous interns, as there are: (Army Hsieh, Thaiwan - ly56620@ly.gov.tw, So Serey Youth, Cambodia and rvsae@sltnet.lk - Manel Kulathunga, Sri Lanka). They could get useful suggestions and information.

  • An Intern can contact his/her country embassy in Brussels and find out about EU-related activities. It is also important to contact the Country Desk to find out about his/her country's EU-relationship.

  • It is better if the Group can co-ordinate Meeting of Stagiaires (calling all inters who are following different committees in the group) once a week and let them exchange and share views in different activities.
