(October 12,
2005/ Taipei, Taiwan) The Liberal International Women’s Workshop
for members and observers of the Council of Asian Liberals &
Democrats (CALD) starts today with the welcome reception hosted
by the Democratic Progressive Party at the Holiday Inn Asiaworld
Hotel in Taipei.
Ms. Hsu chia-ching, Taipei City Councilor
and DPP Director of Women’s Development has formally opened the
workshop.
Focusing on the
theme “Advancing Women in Politics: the Role of Political
Parties”, the workshop is designed for women planning to run for
political office, plus political party staff and campaign
workers. The workshop is divided into 3 sessions: namely, the
role of women in political parties, developing campaign skills
and confident communication skills. This will be capped by a visit
to a local campaign headquarters.
The workshop
is facilitated by Ms. Sarah Brinton, lead trainor of the Gender
Balance Task Force of the British Liberal Democrats and Ms.
Victoria Marsom, Senior Election Campaign Organizer also of the
UK Liberal Democrats.
The training is
aimed at developing women’s campaign skills and helping them
gain confidence to run for political positions. The workshop
will also concentrate on how to overcome obstacles and how to
find support within their political parties as avenues to
greater participation. The workshop will also focus on how to
manage women’s role within their parties and sharpening
communication skills with personal action plans that set
achievable goals.
This is in line
with the “Win with Women” Global Action Plan and this is Liberal
International’s 3rd regional workshop after Bucharest, Romania
(for Eastern Europe) and San Jose, Costa Rica (for South
America).
Participants
come from the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, Liberal
Party of the Philippines, Malaysian People’s Movement Party,
Liberal Party of Sri Lanka, Singapore Democratic Party, Sam
Rainsy Party of Cambodia, Liberal Forum Pakistan, Democratic
Party of Hong Kong, Indonesian
Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the National Awakening
Party of Indonesia (PKB),. |
