(February 4,
2007 / Jakarta, Indonesia) The Council of Asian Liberals &
Democrats (CALD) starts today the 1st CALD Political Party
Management Workshop focusing on political party organization.
Workshop
participants come from CALD member and observer parties as well
as partner organizations. It is supported by the Friedrich
Naumann Foundation and hosted by the Nation Awakening Party (PKB)
and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).
The four-day
workshop held at the Four Seasons Hotel-Jakarta pushed through
despite the massive flooding in the Indonesian capital.
Speakers for
the workshop are Mr. Paul Rowland, Senior Resident Director of
the Indonesian office of National Democratic Institute fir
International Affairs (NDI) and Mr. Stefan Kapferer, Head of the
Representative Office of the State of Lower Saxony in Berlin and
Germany's Free Democrat Party former campaign and strategy
manager.
The facilitators are top Philippine political consultant Ms. Malou Tiquia and Mr. Lambert Ramirez, Executive Director of the
National Institute for Policy Studies.
The
objectives of the results-oriented program are: to give
participants an overview of political parties and their role and
functions in a democracy; to learn the basic requirements and
functions of political party organization and management; to
learn from other political parties and identify best practices
in terms of management and internal party reform; to encourage
transparency, accountability and internal democracy in political
parties; to observe and understand the political environment in
the host country, Indonesia
The
participants are Mr. Peter Lim Bin from the National Council of
the Union of Burma, Mr. Keo Phirum and Mattew Sherwin from the
Sam Rainsy Party in Cambodia, Mr. Ahsanul Mina from the Nation
Awakening Party of Indonesia, Mr. Hendra Kusumah of the
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, Mr. Dong-Ho Lee from
the Uri Party of Korea, Ms. Katherine Ooi Seok Ting from the
Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, Mr. Asif Khan from the Liberal
Forum Pakistan, Ms. Chit Asis from the Liberal Party of the
Philippines, Mr. Romesh Fernando from the Liberal Party of Sri
Lanka, and Mr. Jirayu Tulyanond from the Democrat Party of
Thailand.
Also
participating were select FNF staff: Ms. Sungeun Lim of FNF
Korea and Mr. Warsito Ellwein of FNF Infonesia.
