(July 24, 2008/ Phnom Penh, Cambodia) Members of the CALD
electoral observation mission to Cambodia met yesterday with
Hon. Jules Maaten, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and
member of the Dutch Liberal Party (VVD) and with Baroness Sarah
Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London, during a luncheon
meeting held at Romdeng Restaurant, an initiative of the Mith
Samlanh Friends group which trains former street youths in
catering and hospitality. Apart from supporting the
campaign of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), a CALD member party,
Hon. Maaten presented the European and Liberal Democrats’
Say No initiative that launched
an online petition to fight child prostitution.
This advocacy is in conjunction with Hon. Maaten’s parliamentary
colleagues from the Alliance of Liberal and Democrats for Europe
(ALDE) that calls for an end to child prostitution, which seeks
to collect a million signatures from people who say “No to
child prostitution. Enough is enough."
The ALDE fact-finding mission on Child Sex Tourism was a
five-day mission in Bangkok, Thailand and Phnom Penh, Cambodia
from July 19-23, 2008. Members of the mission met with
representatives of UN agencies, the government police, NGOs, and
political parties such as the Democrat Party of Thailand and SRP,
all of which have platforms to tackle the problem of child
prostitution in the region.
