(July 18, 2004/
Taipei, Taiwan) The Liberal Party of Philippines delegation finished
today its three day visit to
Taiwan,
in particular, with the officials of the Democratic Progressive
Party. Rep. Hermilando Mandanas, the mission’s head, claimed
the unofficial visit to
Taiwan
as a success.
The five LP
Representatives, Herminaldo Mandanas, Danilo Suarez, Lorenzo
Tanada III, Reynaldo Uy and Matias Defensor, were welcomed by
the Democratic Progressive Party and met several seniors
government official within the three-day mission.
Mr. Chang Chun-hsiung,
Secretary General, DPP; Mr. Steve Chen, Deputy Minister,
Ministry of Economic Affairs; Mr. Lai Chin-lin, Vice Minister,
Council of Labor Affairs; Ms. Chang Fu-mei, Minister, Overseas
Chinese Affairs Commission; Mr. Mark Chen, Minister, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs; Mr. Tseng Shen-pao, Deputy Commissioner, Taipei
County Government; Mr. Su Tseng-chang, Secretary General,
Presidential Office; Mr. Chiu I-jen, Secretary General, National
Security Council, and Mr. Tai Chen-yao, Vice Minister, Council
of Agriculture all took the opportunity to meet the delegation.
The LP
Representatives and the DPP officers exchanged political ideas
and shared various experiences during the meetings. More
cooperation and concrete achievements are expected in the near
future between the Philippines and Taiwan through the efforts of
the two liberal political parties in these countries—both
incidentally, being founding members of the Council of Asian
Liberals & Democrats (CALD).
Through the
meetings, the LP Representatives proposed long-run and tight
relationship between both parties. Some practical actions were
proposed. The parties agreed that economics and trades were
particularly important in terms of bilateral relationship, and
therefore, the effective economic policy was the key in
attracting more Taiwanese business investments. The
representatives of the two parties promised to further promote
friendly relations between the two neighboring countries.
Bridging and
strengthening the relationships between the liberal and
democratic parties in Asia is a major objective CALD. The
success of this mission is another milestone in bridging bridges
amongst liberals from the region. |
