(March 19,
2005/ Taipei, Taiwan) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats
(CALD) holds today its first Executive Committee Meeting at the Spring
Resort Hotel.
The meeting
was presided by Ms. Bi-Khim Hsiao, MP, CALD Secretary General.
The party representatives were Taiwanese Chairwoman of the
Research and Planning Committee of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs Maysing Yang and Ms. Huai Hui Hsieh of the
Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan; Dr. Neric Acosta, MP, of
the Liberal Party of the Philippines; Dr. Buranaj Smuthraks, MP
of the Democrat Party of Thailand; Senator Ung Bun Ang of the
Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia; Dr. Chua Peng Song, MP, of the
Malaysian People’s Movement Party (Gerakan); Dr. Rajiva
Wijesinha of the Liberal Party of Sri Lanka; Dr. Chee Soon Juan
of the Singapore Democratic Party and Mr. Maung Maung of the
National Council of the Union of Burma.
The CALD
Secretariat was represented by Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel,
executive Director and Program Officers Mr. Brian Gonzales and
Ms. Andrea Yang. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation was
represented by Mr. Uwe Johannen, Regional Director for East and
Southeast Asia and Dr. Ronald Meinardus, Resident Representative
(Manila).
The
Executive Committee evaluated past projects since the last
Execom meeting (Penang, August, 2004) including the CALD Vision
Mission Workshop in Penang; the 2nd CALD Communication Workshop
in Phnom Penh; the Manila Mission of the National Council of the
Union of Burma; the Alliance of Liberals & Democrats for Europe
(ALDE)-CALD Meeting in Brussels; the CALD Executive Visit to the
European Commission; CALD-DPP Pre Elections Legislative Mission
to Taiwan; and the 3rd Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia (YLDA)-CALD
Young Leaders Workshop in Katmandu.
They also
planned the future activities of CALD including the Liberal
International-CALD Women's Conference and Workshop and the 3rd
CALD Communications Workshop.
