On April 3-8,
2005, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held its 112th
General Assembly in Manila. The IPU, which enjoys a
consultative status with the United Nations, is the
biggest international alliance of parliamentarians.
CALD
organized side activities including the missions of the
Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) of Cambodia and the National
Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) aimed at further
advocating democratic reforms in the two countries. The
Liberal Party of the Philippines and CALD, which is based
in Manila, served as host organizations of these missions
and other activities for liberals worldwide. Senate
President Franklin Drilon, who is also the President of
the Liberal Party and member of the CALD Executive
Committee, is the President of the 112th IPU General
Assembly.
