Mission Background

It was in 1988, for the first time, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan invited the American delegation visiting Taiwan for its local government elections. The DPP has been inviting delegate coming from other different countries when the elections in Taiwan are close to the date. Having scholars, party representatives and officials visiting Taiwan has not only bridging our communications and friendship with other countries, but has also significantly promoted the democratic values and system in Taiwan.

We hail the remarkable achievements of the Millennium Taiwan presidential election. It is frequently mentioned that Taiwan has become one of the most successful models among the Asian countries struggle for their own democracy. As a member of Asia, Taiwan is obligate to share the experiences with the Asian democratic and liberal parties.

Prior to the 2004 presidential election in Philippines, the Department of International Affairs of DPP organized a delegation to Manila in observing the electoral campaign and political changes in Philippines. The trip was defined a constructive one in terms of strengthening the DPP-LP relationship and broadening the DPP’s knowledge on the Filipino politics.

The Department of International Affairs is currently organizing another pre-election trip to Bangkok Thailand on 4-6 February, 2005 for the same objectives. The Thai politics has been through the power transitions and constitutional amendments. However, unfortunately, our party has not been able to establish the political network in Thailand. The DPP is hoping to exchange ideas and electoral campaigning experiences with our neighbor countries in the following years.

Fighting against the autocracy, seeking for democratic resolutions and economic reforms, Thailand is challenged by a various issues, which to some extent, shares the similar experiences with Taiwan. Therefore, the DPP ought to actively initiate the communication with the local organizations. The Department of International Affairs is anticipating a long-run relationship with the Thai Political Parties follow by the trip.

Furthermore, after the constitutional amendments in 1997, Thailand has changed its electoral system to a so-called "single district, two votes", which the Taiwanese society has been demanding for the same change. Therefore, the DPP believes the trip to Bangkok will surely bring back the party some constructive knowledge.
